Basic Principals
The aim of Friday school is to encourage the children to have confidence to speak English. We teach 3 sessions each Friday which involve playing games and speaking in English. The sessions are run by volunteers working at M.I.S and are supervised by a teacher. We want the children to enjoy speaking English and make new friends with us at M.I.S.
Who is it for?
· Children are invited from local primary schools in Morogoro. We have worked with 2 previous schools but are keen to establish links with other schools too. We have also recently invited students from the Amani centre to come and use the school pool and toys during Friday school. The Amani centre caters for children with a physical and mental handicap.
· We invite 30 students aged 10-11 to come for a 6 week block of lessons. Each school term we invite 30 new students.
· We also encourage teachers from the local schools to join us too so that they can practice their own English, help manage the children and learn some new teaching activities to take back to their classrooms.
What do we teach?
Topics taught depend on the students’ level of English and what their teachers request, but typically include introductions, likes and dislikes, numbers and colours, adjectives, prepositions, time and hobbies. The aim is to develop the English levels of Tanzanian state school students who will move on from primary school to secondary school where the language of instruction changes from Swahili to English.
