MIS is very happy to receive volunteers for any period of time, be it 2 weeks or a year. If you are interested in volunteering at our school, please email us.
Ø Volunteers help to run our Friday School (formally Saturday School) programme.
Ø We also involve volunteers in a whole range of classes and activities at the school, supporting the learning of our students as well as providing even more extra-curricular opportunities.
Ø As well as working at M.I.S and running Friday school, it is possible to organise short placements or visits for our volunteers to other local initiatives. Previous visits include other local schools, a centre for handicapped children, a homeless centre and an orphanage.
Ø Volunteers can choose to provide for themselves independently or to live in a furnished house located a short distance from school. With this option they eat all their meals at the school canteen with the children who board. This allows them to get fully involved in school life. Volunteers contribute a small amount to cover living and food costs but this is both inexpensive and good value.
Ø Before coming to work at M.I.S it is important that the correct VISA is obtained. The school can help with this process.

One of my fondest memories of MIS was Friday School. My only ever regret with the program was that we had to say good bye to the kids after only six weeks – just when we had started to get to know them. Friday School was often a challenge as there were always language and cultural barriers with the kids, but it was always rewarding when I saw the looks on their faces as they splashed around in the pool, and especially when they were presented with their completion certificates.

I’m Patrick and I was volunteering at MIS when I was 18 years old from February to June 2010, acting as a classroom assistant and taking medium sized groups for work on maths and language. The range of ages that I was teaching (from 5 to 16) meant that it was never boring! The staff were great and so were the kids. There were plenty of opportunities for travel due to nice long holidays, and there is so much to see and do: climbing massive mountains, visiting safari parks, swimming with whale sharks off Mafia Island, snorkelling, chilling on the beach... Tanzania is simply a beautiful and amazing country which I was devastated to leave.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time here and am sure that I will never forget it. Both staff and students are welcoming and friendly and I am sad I have to go but I’m sure I’ll be back to visit one day!
